Breaktime: Free from Hate

Free From Hate

The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked. Psalm 58:10

It is hard to imagine gladness overcoming us when our feet are standing in the avenger's blood. David uses such strong language to express the righteous judgment that prevails. He is in no way suggesting a personal vendetta but is elated when wickedness is overthrown.

In our world, we, too, love to see justice. But often, the line of judgment can interfere with righteousness. We need to stand on the side of right and not bow to the expressions that evil has taken. It is a temptation when evil seems to be reigning, to take a stand of hate. No one likes it when the wicked seem to be winning.

Friends, life is unfair, but our role is to support justice and not bend our knee to acts of hatred or strife. When hate is the motive, we are no better than the wicked we are trying to overcome. God’s love is righteous, just, and lives within each of us. We can celebrate when justice is served and still keep our feet planted in God's holiness.
