Breaktime Bible Study: Remove the Power of the Wicked

Remove the Power of the Wicked

Break the teeth in their mouths, O God; LORD, tear out the fangs of those lions! Psalm 58:6

David is a victim of the wickedness, and now he cries out to God. He recognizes the evil and rebellion all around him, and it seems hopeless. Often a serpent charmer would beat out the serpent's fangs with a stone or stick so the deadly poison would stop. The point of David’s metaphor is that God would remove the power of the wicked and deprive them of their ability to harm.

Could this be our prayer for the wicked in our nation, that God would take away their ability to bring harm? What a bold and courageous prayer, that even the power to be wicked would be taken away. God is able to do immeasurably more than all we can imagine.

When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.” Acts 3:26

God sent Jesus to bless us and give us the strength to turn from all our wicked ways. Keeping ourselves free from any participation in evil is where God is calling us. When darkness falls right in our path, our role is to flee before we, too, are lured into its attraction. We pray God will take away the desire to do evil even for those around us who are caught in its practice.
