Breaktime Bible Study: The Need for Humility

The Need for Humility

I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight! Psalm 59:4

David is proclaiming his innocence and the desperation of his enemy's attack. He is asking God to look upon his situation with mercy, for true humility always leads to God’s mercy. David’s humble heart is crying out for God’s eye and actions on his condition.

Humility realizes the need for God. It is evident in times of stress that our greatest need isn't our pride, but for humility to be engaged. Pride resists the need for God and relies on the limited measures of our strength to carry us through. David could have sulked and fallen prey to pride, fighting with natural weapons. But he realized his attack was too big for him.

Have we ever been in a place that is too much for us to handle? This is the most critical place for humility to reign. It is right amid strife, where we can fall into God’s hands of mercy. We no longer have to rely solely upon ourselves, but we have supernatural help to carry us through.
