Breaktime Bible Study: Start with Me

Start with Me

consume them in your wrath, consume them till they are no more.

Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Psalm 59:13

David now asks God to consume his enemy, and they would be removed until they are gone. He wanted the sin to be destroyed entirely, and for no remnant to be left behind. David knew if sin is left unattended, it can ruin an entire nation. Can sin be left unattended, and a society continue to thrive? It is a question worth thinking about?

If we all could take care of our hearts before God, it would be a great place to begin. Instead of attacking others, what if we opened our hearts before God and allowed sin to be consumed? What if the God who rules would be the ruler of our hearts? It is easy and cowardly to point the finger at others when sin is reigning in our hearts.

3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. MT. 7:2-5

If we desire a better society to live in, it starts with us. First, take a good long look in the mirror, asking God to reveal your heart…your sin. To make it as evident to us as the sin of others. If we desire change in our world, let it begin with us. Let us be brave enough to become transparent with our sins. And if you say you don’t have any, well that is a great place to start.
