The goal of the enemy was to overpower David and get at him to win the battle in his mind. They wanted to get under his skin and irritate him and they wanted to push him to a place where they knew he was being swallowed up. However, instead of allowing their ways to determine David’s actions, he prayed for God to expose their ways.

David’s confidence did not rest in man or his own strength but exclusively in who God is. He knew God would contend for him and he didn’t need to fret the opinions of his accusers. He rested in God and desired God to become active in his request, but he waited on God’s timing. He needed God’s attention and appealed for Him to rise to his defense and its interesting how much he desired God to contend for him, not others.

David knew God as the One who sees all his situations and hears all that is happening to him. David knew the deep insurance in His heart that God was watching over him even though life had misfortune. The fortunate thing is David was secure in his relationship and knew God had his best interest. He needed God’s help and didn’t hesitate to bring his heart before God −David was needy.

The enemies of David made a career of trying to get him to falter. They were after his heart trying to get him to participate in their schemes. They didn’t like living at peace because they fed themselves off of conflict or drama and they came after those who were living quietly in the land.

David is innocent and yet hated which is a strong word the psalmist uses to describe how others viewed him. Could it be David’s righteous living brought enemies despising his nature? The unrighteous don’t have to have a reason to hate those who walk according to the ways of God but often is the case.

Prey or Pray


Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. Psalm 35:16

Again, in this verse, the power of words trying to destroy David’s reputation and trying to advance David’s belief about himself. Words may be able to destroy his status in front of others but not in the presence of God. David’s enemies put down their swords and used their tongues only to find him unmovable. David is still standing in faith and keeping his tongue under the disciple of God.
