The Teaching of Suffering

The Teaching of Suffering

Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever. Psalm 44:23

There was no other explanation to the Psalmist and their suffering other than, God is sleeping. The only answer for the writer was for God to awaken and realize their pain and agony and come quickly. His cry is for the Lord to awake and rescue for he knew one word from God, and all would be answered.

In difficult times of life, it may seem like God has shut his eyes and fallen asleep. Many of us probably have wondered the same, why isn’t God coming to our rescue. Put an end to the suffering Lord, is often our plea.

The road of suffering is an enduring one, no matter what trial we are going through. No one really can understand our individual pain, and so for most of us, we try and mask or escape its reality. Very rarely will we openly admit the pain we are enduring and cry out with such intensity as the writer. We haven’t really been taught how to suffer, only prosper. But could that be exactly what the Lord could guide us through it all? We can still prosper through suffering with Him so when we sense God is a long way off remember, God hasn’t moved nor is He sleeping. God is very aware of what is going on in our lives.
