Finding Treasure

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.

Matthew 13:44

When I was a little boy, I loved digging in the ground, convinced that just like my hero Indiana Jones x would mark the spot and I’d find buried treasure. I managed to make a lot of holes, but I never came across much more than an old rusty nail or pop can pull tab. However, at the age of 15 I did find the treasure of all treasures when I began following Jesus.

Those days of digging may be 40+ years in the past, but there are still times today when I know I’m seeking after things I’ll either never find or won’t last. I need daily reminders that my treasure is in Christ - one that will last forever and never fade. My devotional for today comes from Our Daily Bread and is titled “Finding Treasure.” The author starts with the story of the Saddle Ridge Hoard, a cache of gold coins worth $10 million dollars that a couple accidentally stumbled across one day while on a walk. It sounds cliche to say this, but as Christians we know having our sins forgiven and a relationship with God for all eternity is worth more than all the gold coins in the world!

The writer of today’s devotional said this:

...Jesus tells of a treasure accessible to all who confess their sins and receive and follow Him (John 1:12). We’ll never come to an end of that treasure. As we leave our old lives and pursue God and His purposes, we encounter His worth. Through “the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:7), God offers us treasure beyond imagination—new life as His sons and daughters, new purpose on earth, and the incomprehensible joy of eternity with Him.

Maybe you have plenty of money in the bank, or maybe you’re literally down to your last penny. Whatever your circumstances, remember in Christ you have a gift worth more than all the treasure in the world combined!
