Breaktime: Shortness of Life

You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. Psalm 39:5

David now seems to be concerned with the brevity of life for it is short, only a handbreadth, which is a very short measurement. Oh, what the Psalmist may have been considering −if the Lord could only increase my life. There is no one exempt from the physical, ending of life on this earth.

Haven’t we all felt this at one time or another. How fleeting life is and how wonderful it would be if the Lord would add days or slow down time. The years seem to be passing by way too quickly for our liking. We can become overly concerned with our days and allow fear of death to keep us in its grip. When this happens, we become captivated and fail to live in the extraordinary purposes of life.

Imagine if your life is extended, would that only lead to further frustration? Today is the day to live in the fullness of life in view of eternity for every day is one more day in eternity. Life may be short on this side of heaven but in light of eternity, it is forever. We live in such a way as if life will last forever, making the most of the steps we have left here. Today is the day to live to your fullest.
