Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. Psalm 38:1
We all want God’s grace and mercy to touch our lives but the Lord disciplines those He loves. Another way God reveals His unfailing love to us is through discipline.
And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? Hebrews 12:5-7
One of the greatest ways to grow in the Lord is to receive His discipline and grow from our mistakes. An undisciplined child walks a difficult path in this life as they live with a heart that finds is difficult to receive correction and a mentality of, “I do what I want when I want.” Life can become very self-centered and uncontrolled when we live undisciplined.
However, when we receive the discipline of God, the Spirit empowers us to be self-disciplined as he gives us strength to receive correction and a humble heart to heed discipline. Will we allow ourselves to take responsibility for the wrong and take the next steps to move forward with the Lord?
