Breaktime: A Heart Filled with Song
A Heart Filled With Song
For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. Psalm 47:7
Thinking of God as the King over all the earth is enough to start praising. We are surrounded by many powers, but there is no one greater than the King of Kings. Many forces try to deceive us into believing they are more powerful, but utterly they are not real.
When we sing, it is an excellent reminder who is really in control and all-powerful. Praising has a simple way of putting all the competing powers in place. Turning our attention to the greatness of God puts God in the right place in our hearts.
The psalmist is reminding us to sing words to God and not just to be heard by others. When we sing our words, whether sung with every perfect note or not, the matter is in the heart. The heart determines who the singing is for. Imagine the God of the universe hearing the words you are singing and being delighted. Praise changes everything when the words are being sung to God. It is more than getting caught up in an emotional experience; it is allowing our heart to be freed from all other control than God. A praising heart doesn’t have room from the things which contradict.
