Never Overlooked - Dream Small (like the Josh Wilson song)

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:58

I appreciate the many things our station manager Bev does here at KCWN, and at the top of that list is her ability to pick out new songs that won’t just entertain our audience, but also be a ministry and encouragement. Last year she added “Dream Small” by Josh Wilson, and almost from day one we started getting phone calls, texts, and e-mails from people letting us know how much they loved the simple but powerful message.

The song begins with Josh listing a number of seemingly mundane, ho-hum, everyday tasks that Christians around the world might be doing at that very moment - a mother signing songs about Jesus to her baby, a busy father taking time out of his schedule to just be present with his kids, a pastor who has faithfully served his small congregation for decades. Then come the chorus:

Dream small
Don't bother like you've gotta do it all
Just let Jesus use you where you are
One day at a time

Live well
Loving God and others as yourself
Find little ways where only you can help
With His great love
A tiny rock can make a giant fall
Dream small

This message of “be faithful in the little things; trust God is working at all times, even when life seems rote or boring,” keeps coming up again and again lately. Maybe because I’m a husband and father of two young kids - there’s a lot of repetition and “small” stuff everyday. Yet I know my (and my wife’s) commitment to do those little things well each and every day is both an expression of our love for God and our children. My job here at the radio station is quite similar - lots of repetition and lots of tiny details most people never see but keep us sounding good and on the air. I don’t mind. I know this is where God wants me; knowing he sees my efforts and is pleased is the best reward and a source of immense comfort and joy. When I forget this, and get caught up in what others think or my desire for their approval (seeing those “likes” on Facebook is a great example!"), that contentment evaporates.

Joni Eareckson Tada has some good words to share on this topic as well; in her devotional “Never Overlooked,” she shares that many Christians believe in God’s eyes the “little” stuff in life doesn’t account for much. Scripture appears to say otherwise; in I Corinthians 15:58 Paul writes, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Joni writes, “In other words, what you do for God—desiring to please Him and serve His people—counts. It makes a difference, not only here and now, but on the other side, in eternity.” She sums up her thoughts with this, “One thing is for certain: God Himself sees and takes note. And what you do for Him today may have far greater implications than you could ever begin to imagine.”

We all have times when it seems as if we’re just spinning our wheels and going nowhere; Monday mornings seem to amplify these feelings even more! If you need a spiritual boost your cup of coffee can’t provide, take a moment and let the words of I Corinthians 15:58 sink in - stand firm. Your life matters, God sees, and your labor in the Lord is not in vain!
